So Saturday I went to the UGA/Kentucky game with Caroline and her dad. The dogs demolished the cats, of course, and even though the game dragged at the end, it was a lot of fun. And then afterwards, we spontaneously decided that I was going to go home with them as a sort of warm-up to the big Thanksgiving visit. It means that her mom won't let her drive up here to get me on Tuesday -- I'm now gratefully accepting offers of rides -- but it's probably one of the best decisions I've made all year.

First we went to her place, ate, and watched the Two Towers extended version. It fucking rocked! There were a few choppy recuts that bordered on discontinuity near the beginning, but all was forgiven for the new scenes. Anyone who, like me, was bummed about the way the movie changed Faramir, watch the longer version! There's a fantastic added scene with Boromir, Faramir, and Denethor that fixes it perfectly, making the movie Faramir just as noble and twenty times as interesting as his book counterpart. Frankly, I can't imagine what possessed them to drop it in the first place.

The next day, I woke up to find that my sister had come over to my dad's to visit. We talked for a while, then Caroline joined us. I eventually convinced the chronically shy Jenn to play some stuff for her by picking up the guitar myself and showing off my utter lack of ability on it. Jenn grabbed Dad's bass, and after a few awkward attempts at playing something together, the natural order reasserted itself and we swapped instruments. What followed was a jam session that can only be described as memorable. I managed to follow the Green Day bass line pretty easily, but when the sis moved on to her original stuff I was lost at sea. It was one of those cute bonding moments that doesn't happen very often at all. I've decided to form a band with my little sister...if she'll let me in.

Anyway, Dad came home, and after a few sidelong glances at me -- he's never seen me play his bass before -- he settled in to watch and offer a few comments on how difficult the bass is to play well. I think he was helping me save face in front of my girlfriend, who ended up spending the day with us.

Anyway, I know this post has been edging toward sappiness, and I should probably warn you that it's about to plunge headlong into it. This weekend is one of the few times in my life I've really felt like part of a family. I was surrounded by people I really cared about, and I was loving it. If you do nothing else this holiday season, get three people that you like having in your family (or that you would like to have in your family) and spend several hours together.

Tonight is going to be the first night I miss home.
