So yeah, we've been talking about disconnecting the phones and switching to cable internet for a while now. We're all sick of paying massive phone bills and it just generally seems like a better idea. So the day before yesterday I told Roommate Brad I'd look at rates and whatnot on the charter website and talk to everybody about what kind of plan we want. Nowhere in there did I say "please disconnect the phone lines at the first possible opportunity so that we get one of those nice transitional periods between DSL and cable where we are totally cut off from the outside world." But he did, anyway. So this recent trend of updating frequently? Over. Fuck me. How am I even going to call the cable company to tell them to change our plan!? Nick ::: 1:19 PM ::: 0 comments
Someone found this blog by looking up "radiohead lyrics nobody likes a smartass but we all like stars" on Google. This makes me strangely proud. In the interests of reader satisfaction, I feel it's only right to let you all know that the song is called "Myxomatosis." I'm not going to post the lyrics here because they don't apply to me at the moment, but if whoever it was would care to e-mail me I'd be happy to send them over. Someone else found me by searching for "Denis I'm a asshole", but let's not go there. My ex-girlfriend Deanna helped me straighten out what I'm getting for Caroline and when. She's really good at that sort of thing. I felt vaguely bad about this until CK told me she was soliciting gift advice from random people in the hall. At least I'm keeping it on a relatively personal level. I participated in my last Psyc experiment earlier tonight. I've generally been disappointed by these studies' deplorable lack of smoke and mirrors, hidden cameras, and electrodes, but this one at least had kind of a cool twist. We were told the experiment was on stress disorders, and we filled out a questionnaire on our level of stress at that moment and in general. Then we were given another packet, with some more questions and some evaluation sheets -- for the unlucky three who they suddenly told us were going to be randomly selected to do an impromptu speech for the group. Of course, we didn't really have to do any speeches, they just wanted to get a read on our response to being required to embarrass ourselves thus. Vurrah vurrah shneaky! Still no electrodes, though. Stupid psychologists. Hey, Caroline, if you're reading this, can you talk to the Milton office for me? My email was mysteriously delayed. Thanks much. If my blogs are getting boring, just take it as a reflection of my life at the moment. Boredom is not always a bad thing. No class tomorrow! Nick ::: 12:11 AM ::: 0 comments
Someone told me I looked like Frodo Baggins today. I was flattered, but let's face it, I look absolutely nothing like Frodo Baggins. As one gentleman put it, "It's cold as balls out here." I'd better get some damn good Christmas presents. Nick ::: 4:22 PM ::: 0 comments
I'm in the Student Learning Center and the chick next to me is headbanging. No joke. I'm also having an obscene amount of trouble not making a mess with this vending machine cinnamon roll. If I ever meet Mrs. Freshley, I'm going to punch her in the face. No more Psychology! Yay! My grade is hovering at 90.7 or something, but there's one more quiz to be graded. I think I did well, but you never know. Fortunately, after today I'm going to end up with half an hour of spare research participation credit, which is worth a couple of extra points on the average. English is also done, except for the final, and I'm actually pretty sad about that. I'll really miss Ms. Inglesby and all my cool classmates and most especially the class that proved that college lectures and discussions can be interesting. I'm keeping my textbook, though, because there's a lot of good writing in there. Yeah, I admit, I'm a nerd. I still have Marine Science classes, but they're not so bad. It's mostly environmentalist stuff rather than actual science now, so while it gets a little political it's very easy to remember. If it's human, it's polluting; if it's not, it's in grave peril; if it's profitable, it's the source of all evil in the universe. And occasionally there's some interesting research presented. Next up is Economics. I think today is the last day of class, but I could be wrong. Nothing much to report on this front, I'm pretty sure I'll ace the final without any trouble. As a result of English and Psyc being over, I've ended up with a whole free day tomorrow. Is anyone planning anything fun in Athens? I'm probably just going to go downtown and scope out the coffee shops if not. Nick ::: 3:08 PM ::: 0 comments
According to reliable sources, the poem I wrote at a party a few weeks ago has been retrieved and preserved by my good friend Jimmy. On a bulletin board by the door where anyone walking in or out can read it. Thanks, Jimmy. I feel creative. I've thought a lot about a story I'm writing, and I think it may be a novel suitable for a film adaptation. I wrote some very interesting music earlier tonight. I say "interesting" because it'd be pushing it to call it anything else. I'd categorize it as thematic fantasia. Which means I-have-no-fucking-idea-what. I've also been judiciously collecting classic rock songs. I was aided in this venture by Comedy Central's showing of Dazed and Confused. I already had Dazed and Confused, but there were lots of other songs which were actually in the film that I didn't have and got. And for some idiotic reason Dazed and Confused itself is not on the Dazed and Confused soundtrack. Stupid movie. I'm listening to the Smashing Pumpkins. They aren't really classic but they are on my playlist. Roommate Ian finally got his crap out of the dryer. He didn't remember it was in there, but he was very affable about the whole process once I reminded him. My laundry is really piling up, especially after the 5 day Thanksgiving absence. Brad, Ian and I have decided to cut off the phone line and switch to cable internet. It's cheaper and it doesn't give NN an opening to waste our money and then not pay his share. Speaking of which, I found $11 on the dining room table and confiscated it. That means he now only owes me 87ยข for the last cable bill, which I'm willing to write off. The song switched to Queen. Queen counts as classic. Last weekend was pretty fun. I had a good time at the party even if I really wasn't in the mood for Alien 2 and didn't enjoy it as much as I would have normally. For anyone who doesn't know, Caroline and I straightened things out. Now it's Flogging Molly. Caroline hates Flogging Molly, fairly irrationally if you ask me. She calls it "Celtic crap" and won't listen to more than 15 seconds. It doesn't sound Celtic to me. It sounds like Irish-American Jig Rock. But the songs are short, and now I'm listening to Aerosmith. I think she'll forgive me for Aerosmith. Is it right of me to pity my girlfriend's ex-boyfriend who's trying to tempt her back? Because I really do. I'm kind of hogging her, what with this near-perfect relationship and everything. Earlier tonight he sent her a song he wrote to show off his creativity -- the poor schlub should really learn to play to my weaknesses. If he's reading this, they are as follows: odd taste in music, refusal to wear trendy sneakers, lack of a car, and furriness. More Queen, then Propellerheads, then a little more Pumpkins. Do the Winamp shuffle! I'm slowly figuring out what to do about the December Triple Threat. You know -- Christmas, CK's birthday, and our 1-year anniversary. I've got pretty solid ideas for the anniversary, but the other two are still eluding me. She tried to pick out shoes for me, for Christmas. She picked out some that looked a little like Jason's. Or, at least, one of Jason's pairs. I'm sure they're very trendy if for no other reason than Jason owns a pair and Caroline picked them out, but I don't give a shit. They simply don't fit my taste. Let me put it this way: they come in green, yellow, or purple. Does it come as a surprise to anyone else that a style of shoe that is available in purple isn't quite right for me? Radiohead, and Caroline's new favorite song, I Am a Wicked Child, to boot. Very nice. Oh, and Drew, I liked Paperbag Writer. "If I could have kept on the straight and narrow But I broke your heart" My last final is on the 15th. I checked this morning. So I will be at home to enjoy the Triple Threat. Which means I can't risk nice convenient internet shopping, because it might deliver to the wrong place. Unless I deliver it to Dad's place...hm... I think I've been really unusually insecure lately. It's probably Caroline doing it to me. It's strange, but being in a relationship this long-lasting makes me worry about her approval more. I should probably get over that, or I'll be a complete nervous wreck within a couple of months. Nirvana, then Pink Floyd. The list plays on. I spent Thanksgiving at my mom's place. I met my sister Jenn's boyfriend, Jon, and he seems like a good kid. Plus they're now Jenn and Jon, which is hilarious. But unfortunately they're both vegetarians, so there weren't enough proper mouths to feed to justify a turkey. I was stuck with peanut-oil fondue. Good, but not turkey, god damn it! I spent half the dinner at the fondue pot with my mom and Alex and the other half at the meatless buffet with the grazers, who were better company. Afterwards we listened to the mix I itemized in the last post, and my mom actually liked it. That was pretty scary, but nothing compared to when she started singing along with "White Rabbit." Moms shouldn't know lyrics like that. Nine Inch Nails playing, Stephen Colbert on the telly. Um. I got nothing. Finis. Nick ::: 12:22 AM ::: 0 comments |
